It’s a usability experiment gone wild. I love it! Sure it’s flash, but it’s mostly used in exciting ways, for innovative navigation and rich media. It’s tricky to use, and we all know what Jakob Nielsen would say about it, but there’s some great thinking happening there too: rather than treat a website as linked text – an electronic magazine – they’ve really tried to present the site as a matrix of related nodes (content and members).

It’s very interesting to see the progression of web based content as technology evolves to create content that is not text. Once content is no longer textual then hyper text markup language (HTML) becomes useless in content presentation. As content moves into new arenas new presentation layers must be utilized and there is less sense in conforming to older text based paradigms for presentation. Perhaps as the web evolves it will move farther from the ‘book’ paradigm with chapters, indexes, titles, etc. and more towards the ‘television’ paradigm, aligning navigation options more closely to a remote control.
